Some Art news

For those of you that didn't see my Facebook post, I give the new Caran D'Ache  Museum Aquarelle Watercolor pencils a thumb's up.  Check out the post on Facebook....

For those of you wanting to really explore mixed media art journaling and exploring other ways to use those sketchbooks....There is an on line art club that costs $5 a month or $45 a year called the Artstronauts Club,  I have already gotten my $45 worth out of the lessons and articles provided already and I have only been on it several weeks. You can go to www.theartstronauts.com for more info.  If you want to check it out or find out more, call me and I can show you.  I can access it on my tablet, smartphone and  laptop.

Also,
Still catching up on my magazines.....The July/August 2013 Issue of Artist's Magazine had these items of interest.....

The add for the White Pitt Pen and it's use with highlighting watercolors caught my eye.

There was an article on using Yupo paper (commonly used for watercolors) that was interesting and informative.  I would recommend reading it if you want to try new things in watercolor.

The article of painting LARGE paintings en plein air was interesting and is something that some of the plein air painters out there may want to read,  Good Article.

There was an article about painting portraits and good color palettes to use in oil, pastel and watercolors.  Although I don't paint portraits, that one was a keeper.

There was an article about Tommi DePaolo and he had an interesting exercise with color on p 50 for children but I also have used a similar exercise for adults that eye opening.  Try it.

I also like the "Find your Tribe" article.

Sketch Club Holiday info

Folks,
After attending the South Bay Board Meeting last night, I realized that all the holidays this year are on Wednesday.

So I will throw this out there.  Folks who want to sketch this week, Meet at the Roast coffee and Tea company on Main Street from 6:30 to 8PM to sketch on the 18th.   I won't be there but if you want to get together and have some great coffee or other hot beverages and sketch, I am sure they would love that at Roast.  Try the Mexican hot chocolate, it has a kick.

Christmas and New Year's, I will issue a sketch challenge in a separate post.  ALSO, if any of you want to get together for some mixed media art journaling with those new sketchbooks you made, let me know, I have a large table we can work on at the house and I usually close my evenings working in my sketchbook so you are welcome to come over.  I have a few days off during the holiday so if anyone wants to assemble to just hang out, let me know.   I am trying not to let the holidays interfere with my creativity.  Been doing pretty good at it, too!

This Wednesday at 6:30 PM

Folks, I was going to schedule a nocturnal sketch and I was hoping we'd have enough snow to do that.  Unfortunately, from a sketching standpoint, the storm was a dud.

So as promised last month, we'll hit the SunVet Mall one more time before Christmas.  All the Christmas decorations are up, the Santa area has some adorable stuffed critters, and down by AC Moore, are cute animated stuff that I never knew they had displayed, until this year.

Hope to see you there.....

This Wednesday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Folks,
We will be meeting this week at the Patchogue Arts Council space on 20 Terry Street in Patchogue....it's the Art Space building.  You can bring your sketch gear and sketch or you can follow along as I demo how to make your own sketchbook,

If you want to learn how to make your own sketchbook, here's a good place to start.

For those on a budget, you can make these with what you have around the house, except for the paper.  Please read through and if you have any questions add them on the Facebook group.  I have thread you can use if you don't want to use dental floss.

If you want to make the sketchbook with me, here's what you need to bring with you:

22 x 30 inch sheet of watercolor or heavy printmaking paper (If you want to do both, bring two sheets.....Michael's carries 140 lb WC paper than some folks have used, it isn't bad....)
Yardstick or ruler
scissors
a large needle with a big eye, or a #18 or 22 tapestry needle
waxed dental floss, bookbinding thread, OR waxed linen thread (harder to find) ANY ONE of these will work PLUS I have waxed thread I can bring with me.
pencil

If you have tube watercolors and a big thirsty brush, bring them and a water container.

THESE TWO ITEMS BRING ONLY IF YOU HAVE THEM please don't feel you have to rush out and buy them:
an awl if you have one
bonefolder if you have one

This Wednesday at 5PM and Thanksgiving Challenge

Folks,
This week we have a show that several of us were asked to be in.   One of the things about being out in the public eye is we are out where people can see us and a gallery owner offered space on his wall this week to sketch group members that wanted to show.

So for this week, the sketch night will be at the show.

However, for those are are already away or will be on the road, your Thanksgiving Challenge is to sketch something seasonal.  Be it the turkey, dessert or anything else that pops into your head.  Post it on FB so we all can see it.

If you are around, pop in to see Joan's, Bill's, Terri's, Rosanne's and my paintings tomorrow evening!

Tomorrow evening at 6:30 PM

As you folks know, it's getting chiily out and it gets harder to find indoor venues to sketch.  One place that we found is the Sayville Diner on Main Street in Sayville....we'll head on over there and grab a soup or a coffee and sketch.

Tomorrow Evening beginning around 5:30 - 6 PM

Folks,
Sorry folks, I have to do some weather watching this time of year and gauge the time left in the evenings to sketch....it actually looks like it is going to be a nice evening so we are going to sketch in Sayville tomorrow evening.   I am trying to stretch it out the best I can before we have to come indoors.....Sayville is one of the better spots where you can still sketch as it gets dark because the store fronts are lit up.....and you can get a nocturnal in if you want.

There are a many shops to sketch or you can sit down by the Starbucks....Four Star usually has seasonal stuff out front.    There's an Irish Pub of sorts, Down the Rabbit Hole is cute....etc.....

Wednesday, October 9, 2013

This Wednesday at 6 PM

This Week we will be sketching on Main Street in Patchogue near the Roast coffee & tea company. There are a lot of great Subjects to sketch. If The weather is bad you can sketch in Roast.

Tuesday, October 1, 2013

This Wednesday at 6PM

This week we are going to sketch on Main street in Sayville near the Starbuck's.  There is plenty going on, well lit at nght for those that want to stay and take advantage of the nice evening we are expecting tomorrow......you can pick either side of the street to sketch.   This would be a good night to try the night sketch/painting challenge.

Monday, September 23, 2013

This Wednesday at 6PM

Let's start off Fall with a trip to the Lakeview Cemetary....Summer is gone, Autumn is here and the year is slowly winding down.

We are going to sketch the Lakeview Cemetery located on Main Street  in Patchogue between Waverly Avenue and right next to Briarcliff College....you can park on Main Street or you can park in Briarcliff's/YMCA parking lot and walk around.....though I think there is a way in on the YMCA side.

This cemetery has a lot of old monuments and some pretty awesome trees.   It's a very peaceful place to sketch....and the residents don't mind the company.  If we are lucky, we'll get a jump on fall foliage.

You will need to bring a chair and possibly insect repellent, though I am hoping that the bugs are hanging more toward the water.

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Tomorrow evening at 6PM

It's going to be a chilly evening tomorrow.......

One last gathering before Flo's closes for the season....meet us for one last summer evening at Flo's.......

I'm so depressed summer is over............

Great sunset alert - tomorrow at 6PM

OK, barring any interruptions from thunderstorms......we will be sketching at the end of West Avenue in West Sayville......go past the entrance to the Maritime Museum and all the way to the end of West Ave is a pier where I am informed there are great sunsets......or maybe great cloud formations if Mother Nature decides to paint a different sky.....

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

This Wednesday at 6PM

This week we will still try to get in a good sunset.  We'll meet at the Sandspit Park aka Davis Park Ferry.  If you are a Town of Brookhaven resident and you have a sticker, you can park with the sticker.  If you are not a resident, there are a couple of options for parking.....you can park on the street for free and walk your sketch gear in....or you can pay the fee and park down at the end where we will be sketching....I think the fee is $5...tell them you are NOT there for the ferry but to sketch and yes, we will be leaving at dusk.  :-)

http://www.longisland.com/business/sandspit-beach.html

There are some good sketching subjects and it's a decent spot for sunsets.  Just go toward the back on the western side where the inlet is for the boats to come in and out of the Patchogue River...

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

This Wednesday at 6PM

Moving up sketch to 6PM since it has been getting dark a lot quicker.....

This week we will sketch at the end of Blue Point Ave... Trying to get in that last bit of summer scenes before we get forced indoors again.....You can sketch the water, there's a small beach or there are some houses nearby....

There are some good opportunities for sunset sketches.

This Wednesday at 6:30 PM

This week we are going to the Meadow Croft Park at 299 Middle Road in Bayport/Sayville.  It's where the Loughlin Winery is.....you can pull up either to get the directions.

Note about parking....they don't want you to park on the long driveway going into the estate.  Go all the way in and park at the lots up by the house...there's parking on the left and the right....on the right you'll see a picnic area where you can park. It's swampy so bring the critter repellent.

Sketch Thoughts from Gina

I did this in my sketchbook on Sunday evening.....I saw some interesting cloud/atmosphere formations/color so I decided to make the sky the focal point....I had been reading Plein Air magazine and there was an artist in there, Billy Solitario, who did cloud paintings and I was intrigued how he had an entire painting of open sky/clouds, with just a strip of land at the bottom. We have waterscapes like that around here that I originally thought was boring until I realized the sky could be the subject with the strip of land and water at the bottom to give it scale. Give it a try folks, the article is in the July 2013 issue of Plein Air.....I also found some other interesting stuff in there that I will be posting in a bit

Monday, July 22, 2013

This Wednesday at 6:30 PM

This week we are going to sketch at Pine Neck park.....6:30 PM....

Here's the info for the park....

http://brookhaven.org/Departments/ParksRecreation/ThingsToDoInYourTown/LaunchingRamps.aspx
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_Neck

It's not a cultivated park so make sure you bring a chair....there's a beach, there's a marsh that the sun sets over.....there's folks crabbing/fishing, a boat ramp....etc so there are many subjects to sketch.....

Just bring the insect repellent or wear appropriate clothing in case there's no breeze and the critters are out.

The park is at the very END of Pine Neck.....go all the way down until you are almost on top of the guard rail at the end and you will see the gate on your right.....there's a Marina right before the entrance....

At the request of a few sketch club members, we a returning to the Maritime Museum this week.  It's a great spot, just bring the bug spray and maybe something to anchor your stuff because last week we didn't need the bug spray but we were definitely buffeted by the wind.....

Folks, since this week is a holiday week and I am sure many of you have plans, I am going to issue an Independence Day Sketch Challenge  instead of a gathering for this week.

During all the festivities, try to sketch anything that has to do with the freedom and independence that is the basis of this holiday.  Please try to post at least one sketch on our FB page but I urge you to post as many as you would like to celebrate the holiday!  This is a Independence Day week long challenge so you have plenty of time to sketch!

Here is the FB Group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/patchsketch/   If you are not added to the group yet, just click to join and when I see you I will add you.

Happy 4th to all of you!!!

Wednesday at 6:30PM

OK, for all you Urban Sketchers out there that like structures.....we are going to sketch on West Main Street in Patchogue, near Queen City Cupcakes, Quench and Brick House Brewery.  Watching the weather, it looks like Wednesday may be nice, but windy, so there are quite a few places on that block where we can sketch and not have to chase our art supplies.  The Antique Store on the corner of West Main and Railroad Ave had some really great stuff in their window worth sketching....there's Bobbique or Brick House Brewery if you want to sketch and eat and Queen City Cupcakes if you want coffee and a snack while you sketch.  Try to place your chair out of the way of pedestrians, that's a busy area.

Also, I have a formal request in for Wertheim, I am waiting to hear back from them.   I have that tentatively scheduled for the 26th.

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Here are some books I have read that are useful to either learn how to sketch or journal, or just enjoy the art of another sketcher, something to curl up in a chair with a cup of java or tea on a cold winter evening....

Here's books on art journaling:

The Art Journal Workshop by Traci Bunkers, published by Quarry Books.
Painted Pages by Sarah Ahearn Bellemare, published by Quarry Books
Creative Wildfire by L.K. Ludwig, published by Quarry Books
The Journal Junkies Workshop by Eric M Scott and David R Modler, published by North Light Books

Combining sketching and journaling:

Journal Bliss by Violette, published by North Light Books...(this is a fun little book!)
Artist Journal Workshop by Cathy Johnson, published by North Light books (Put this one on your list!)
The Decorated Journal by Gwen Diehn, published by Lark Books (Gwen writes a lot of how-to books on how to MAKE sketchbooks/journals)

Enjoying the Art of Another sketcher:

1000 Artist Journal Pages by Dawn DeVries Sobol, published by Quarry Books

I am currently reading Dreaming from the Journal Page by Melanie Testa and I LOVE the sections on how to make your own stamps!

For the rest of January.....

Folks, we are also scheduling up Gather Studio dates for this month...  You can come sketch but we were going to use the space to do mixed media/journaling type pages for those of you who have been requesting this activity.

The 16th, we will covering how to get started on a journaling/mixed media page...so bring along the size sketchbook you want to work in and your watercolors....if you would like to use another watermedia, please go to our Facebook page and request more suggestions...

Folks, the mixed media/journaling activities in your sketchbooks are something ANYONE can do, so if you have a friend that's been wanting to try it, bring them along....you can mix this technique with either your regular sketching or try something new.  It's a great activity for loosening up.

We are asking for a small fee of $5 for using the space...Sketch Club is FREE to everyone, however, since we are using Gather Studio's location, we are asking for $5 pp to defray some of their costs of having the space.

I will announce the other dates shortly.
