It's that special time of year again where we celebrate the holidays and this year, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve have fallen on Wednesdays. There were be no organized sketch nights but you will be encouraged to sketch any activities you attend. We will be starting sketch night back up again on January 7th.
Watch Facebook for Seasonal Challenges and for posting holiday sketches. I will be posting a challenge over the holidays on Facebook.
So from my family to yours, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and have a very happy and safe New Year!

The Patchogue Sketch Club was created for the purpose of getting people together to discover the value of sketching. Sketching itself is its own art form, sketching helps artists "see" better and enhances drawing skills. Sketching is also a fun way of recording the world around us much more intimately than a camera. The Patchogue Sketch Club Outings are open to everyone and there is no fee, unless the venue where we are sketching charges a fee for admission.

Sketch Night 6:30 PM this evening
For Sketch Night Tonight note the time, 6:30PM.......Before you read the venue below, if it is snowing this evening and the roads are NOT safe and a wee bit slick, stay home and sketch something seasonal and post it on FB. I have been watching the weather these past few days and the original idea I had for this evening won'f work because of the weather and the lack of the specific venue I am looking for.....So this evening, to beat the cold, we are going to a different coffee shop, one we have not gone to before, the Starbuck's on Sunrise Hwy, the address is 371 North Service Road, it's in the same plaza as Petco. It's at the intersection of Waverly and the North Sunrise Hwy Service Road. They have a nice big table so whoever gets there first, grab that table.

Two things
First, Sketch Night will be at the Roast Coffee & Tea Company on Main Street in Patchogue, Wednesday at 7 PM. Mellow out Thanksgiving Eve with a nice cuppa Joe or one of the many other hot seasonal beverages they are offering.
Second, I am still looking for the Autumn Challenge Sketches so that I can update the pix on the blog and FB.....get them in if you want your sketch or autumn plein air piece featured this month...horizontal sketches will work best....see the "PINNED POST" on our FB Group.

We are going to sketch over at the Sun Vet Mall on Sunrise Highway where we sketched last year.. Sun Vet Mall is on Sunrise Highway near Vet's Highway, and is a tiny Mall that has AC Moore and Toys R Us as anchor stores.....If you go in on the AC Moore side of the mall, you'll find some benches and stuff, but bring a folding chair in your car just in case.

This Wednesday at 6:30 PM
Folks, this week we are going to Panera in Bohemia, on Sunrise Hwy near the Pier 1.
The address is 5191 Sunrise HWy, Bohemia.
I didn't bother to get the back room because if we are back there, there won't be much to sketch.....I don't know how busy it will be and there are booths and some tables. Just grab a spot where you can and sketch. And you might want to grab a beverage or something so they don't kick us out.

This Wednesday from 6:30 to 8PM (they close at 8)
Folks,
The weather is iffy for tomorrow. I'd like to schedule an outdoor event but I don't want to take the chance there may be rain and I found a new venue.
I am going to schedule us to do the Dolci Momenti Bakery in Holbrook.
315 Main St, Holbrook, NY 11741, it's near the Outback Steakhouse. |
John and I went one evening and I sketched the cakes and it was awesome. They have coffee, tea and other beverages and the display cases with the cakes are amazing subjects. They have expresso and cappuccino.
You may have seen my one sketch I did already. It was a lot of fun.

This Wednesday from 5:30 to 7PM
Folks,
This week we are going to sketch at Avery Farm on South Country Road. I don't have an exact address but it's between the Swan Deli and Robinson Blvd. There are two driveways into the property, the driveway you want to use is the one closest to Robinson Blvd. It's the second driveway on the left if you are traveling East Bound from Main Street on S Country Rd or it's the first driveway on the right after Robinson if you are coming West Bound (from Bellport) on S Country Rd. It's a dirt driveway, the groomed one is the wrong driveway to use.
When you come in, SLOWLY drive to the back, you'll see the driveway extends back into the property, go all the way around bearing right toward the barn. There will a long paddock to your left please park head in to the paddock so that everyone fits. Please do not park along side the barn in case people want to sketch the barn.
This is a SKETCH AT YOUR OWN RISK site. It's a farm and farms are not paved, watch your step...bring good shoes and warm clothes.
Please do not open gates or latches, please request assistance from John, the caretaker. I do not want miniature horses getting out on our watch.
There is an old office you drive by to come onto the propery, you can sketch that, the barn and possibly inside the barn, but please request permission first before entering the barn. It's old and you have to be careful where you walk, please request assistance if you wish to go inside.
Final note, please do not approach the Minis or try to pet the minis in their stalls without permission from John. Minis are very gentle but I do not want to be held responsible if someone gets bitten, for your safety and theirs, please leave them be. We want to be welcome back at this site again in the Spring.
Pat and I visited the farm today and it's a great location. If I am giving precautions, it's because we've been invited to the property and I want it to be a safe sketching evening for us and the precious little minature horses. It's very peaceful there.

This Wednesday, 6 PM to 8PM
Folks, this week we will be sketching inside the PAC Gallery on Terry St in Patchogue. I figured since the weather looks iffy, damp and chilly, it would be better do do something indoors.
SOOOOOO.....how about we set up a still life and sketch that? I have a pinkish pumpkin, some gourds, a butternut squash and a spaghetti squash fresh from the farms out east. I am encouraging you to bring something to add to the still life.
Does anyone have a Halloween Skull out of storage yet that we can sketch, too? and an autumn colored tablecloth? Let's have some fun and celebrate the season!
the address is 20 Terry Street, Suite 116, in Patchogue (11772).....it's the huge building behind the Patchogue Library/Post Office.

This week we are sketching in Bellport at the end of Bellport Lane by the water....there is non-resident parking on the right. The guards on duty may not let you park on the pier so if you just park on the right in the lot you should be ok. There is tons to sketch down there by the water. You can go on both sides. You should get in a good hour's worth of sketching before the sun sets, bring bug spray.

This Thursday at 5PM
Don't forget that this is the last week of Alive After Five, Thursday at 5PM, and we will be sketching on Main Street in Patchogue. Our normal meeting place is in front of the Suffolk County Courts at West Ave. If someone wants to bring a table and sit and sketch in front of the Court House, let me know if you also would like to display the Sketch Club banner. I will not be attending, tomorrow. We have been getting a lot of traffic since Jen got us the banner. Otherwise, go around town and enjoy sketching folks participaiting in Alive After Five. It's a fun event. Don't forget to post your pics here on Facebook.
We will go back to All Wednesdays starting next week.

This Wednesday at 6:30PM
Folks,
I know on the schedule we were supposed to paint at the beach near Rosanne's house, but because of the death in her family, we are moving to a different location this week. We are going to try something we haven't before. We are going to sketch/paint at the Fire Island National Seashore at Smith Point.
http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/Parks/Parks/SmithPointCountyPark.aspx
It should be free to enter the Smith Point parking lot at this late time. The Fire Island NS side of the parking lot is ALLLLLLL the way to the western side of the parking lot and then you have to walk up the path toward the Wilderness Center.
For those that may not have been here before, you need to cross the bridge and follow the road all the way around to the eastern side of Smith Point, past the TWA Flight 800 Memorial, Beach Hut and then just before the entrance to the camp grounds, there is the entrance to the parking lot on your left. Go through and then head to the western side of the parking lot at the other end. There is a path that takes you up the beach on the National Park Service Side.
Grab your gear and walk up to the beach and we'll be in that area near the Visitor Center.
Don't forget bug spray and it may be cool by the water.

Sketch night is THURSDAY this week
Folks, don't forget we won't be sketching on Wednesday, we are meeting on Thursday at 5PM at Alive After Five on Main Street down by the Court house building near West Ave. You can sketch the festivities on Main Street.
I will be conducting a home made sketchbook demo, if you would like to make one with me, you will need to bring your own card table plus the supplies I suggested on my Facebook post from August 6. We won't have enough table space for everyone so I suggest you bring your own table. I will be conducting the demo from 5-7 and then I am packing it up for the evening, so you can sketch after if you wish.
Thanks

Take Southern Boulevard, to the end, and make a right on Colonial Drive. Take Colonial Drive to the end and you're at the marina. If you go right after you enter the marina Chris' boat is in that area, she will be there waiting.
Try not to park in any spots that say reserved, with a slip number. Those spots are mostly along the bulk head directly behind the boats. We don't want to get anyone annoyed because they can't use their parking spot. There is plenty of parking just opposite of those. If there isn't a "reserved" sign on the spot, you can use it. Try not to block any piers and such. We don't want to be unwelcome guests.

Folks, sorry for the late notice....family issue.
I think some of us could use a nice relaxing evening of sketching sunsets so I will make this one simple. We will sketch/paint at the Mariner's Museum spot we like in West Sayville, for those of you that are new, that would be the very back of the West Sayville Country Club. Great spot by the water so it should be cool, and it's actually great for sunsets.
Also, I hope many of you are attending tomorrow evening because I would like to discuss a game plan for next week's Alive After Five so we are better organized, now that we know where they want us. If you can't come, please email me if you would like to help me set up some sort of "booth" and I will need help "man-ning" it. Pretty much, give out cards from the PAC show and our new 'Zine.

We are going to meet this week in Sayville down by the water where if it's nice, we can sit out and sketch or have the option to sketch from our cars if it's chilly.
You need to take S Main St/Middle Road to Seaman Road. Follow Seaman Road South to Brown's River Road, which should be the 2nd road on your right. Take that to the the end until you reach the waterfront and we will be sketching there. It's a good location for either sketching from the car or out in the open.

This Wednesday (Times Below)
Folks,
there are two sketch gatherings you can attend this week. One Bill brought to us a few weeks ago that looks to be a great time and I will post that below. I wanted to go to the Northport event but South Bay Art is having their June meeting and a few of us have to attend the meeting as we are board members/chairing an event for them. I am running the Plein AIr Event so I need to be at the meeting to speak about it. The guest speaker for the meeting is Anna Jurinich and she will speak about the publishing process, the illustration of books, and the healing nature of art as well as her recently published book.
I thought they were done for the meetings for the summer but apparently not.
If you want to come to the South Bay Meeting and sketch, the meeting is at the Bellport Community Center on 4 Bell Street, in Bellport at 7:15
If you want to go out the the event in Northport, here's the info at that:

This week we will be assembling at the end of Blue Point Avenue in Blue Point NY. There is a dock area/ beach and people fishing that make good subjects. Off to the side, there are a few homes that we have sketched before that have some nice gardens in the front.
Hope to see you there.

Folks,
it looks like it supposed to rain this week. I am scheduling us to sketch at the Roast Coffee and Tea company on Main street in Patchogue. If it's raining, you can sketch in there, if it is not, there are plenty of store fronts and a Church that make for great sketching. Just bring a chair if you want to sketch outside.
Tuesday, June 3, 2014
This Wednesday at 6:30 PM
Rain or shine, we are going to be sketching at the Flo's in Blue Point. If it rains, we can sketch from our cars down by Corey Beach which is 1 block down from Flo's, Flo's stays open during thunderstorms but will close down if the evening is washed out. For those more interested in scenic pursuits, there is a marina, beach, bay scenery and such down at Corey Beach.
Flo's is located at:
301 Middle Road, Blue Point NY or you can pull up Corey Beach for directions as well.

This Wednesday at 6:30 PM
Weather watching again, looks like no rain for tomorrow evening but they said that about yesterday afternoon and we had sprinkles over here.
We are going to sketch at the Patchogue Garden Club garden at the intersection of Terry St and S Ocean Ave in Patchogue. The garden is mostly green right now so that should present a great challenge on how to work with greens to make them pop (hints, use some compliments, use another color underneath, etc)
In the event it does rain or it gets too chilly, the PAC Gallery will be open (It's located in the ARTSPACE apartment building on Terrry Stree, the big apartment building right next to the garden) for those who wish to seek shelter from the rain or don't want to brave the chill to sketch, so we have an indoor and outdoor venue this week where you can sketch gardens or other artists' work.

Folks,
We are going to sketch at the new Flo's in Patchogue. They just opened about a week ago and since it's supposed to rain tomorrow, I am scheduling Flo's, but if the weather turns out half way decent and you don't want to sketch inside, the Lakeview Cemetary is across the parking lot and the trees are blooming over there.
The address for the new Flo's is below but it's in the same building as Briarcliffe College. Plenty of Parking. We will be sketching at the seasonal Flo's when it reopens next month.

This Wednesday at 6:30 PM
Well, since Old Man WInter 2014 refuses to relinquish his clutches on us with this cool weather...tomorrow we are going to sketch at the Sun Vet Mall on Sunrise Highway. There are a few Spring Displays that will make for great sketching. It's very cheery and Springy. You may need to bring a chair as the benches may not be in the best sketching spots.
For those if you not familiar with Sun Vet Mall, it's the mall where AC Moore is and their address is:
A.C. Moore

5801 Sunrise Hwy
Holbrook, NY 11741

Remember to post your sketches on Facebook.

This Wednesday we will be sketching the Village of Patchogue. You can sketch anywhere on Main Street from Maple Ave just East of the theater to S Ocean Ave....the weather is supposed to be decent. Bring your own chair. There is Roast Coffee and Tea company on that block if you need a warm beverage. Look for store fronts and interesting architectural details to sketch. If it is too chilly for you or the weather changes like it did yesterday morning, (I got caught in that snow on the LIE yesteday morn, what a freaking nightmare) you can always go into Roast and sketch.
Folks, don't forget, to prepare sketches for a Sketch Club show....If you want to put a sketchbook in, please make sure it is a full sketchbook and you don't mind people flipping through it or it being on display for a while... I can show you how to make several types that you can make yourself to add a more original and creative element. You are also welcome to pull your sketches out of the sketchbooks and frame them for the show like Bill and Tom do, if that's what you prefer. Plein air studies done on sketch nights are also welcome.
Again, to be fair to all the folks that do come out and sketch, if you don't attend the sketch outings, you will not be permitted to submit for the Sketch Club side of this show. You don't need to come every week, but you do need to attend outings.

The value of sketching
This is an old Richard McKinley post that had some good basic information for thumbnail sketches. Many of you have expressed your challenges with what information actually needs to go into a sketch or plein air study when we are out sketching on location. This article on Richard's blog should be able to answer some of your questions. I thought these tips were great. Don't let anyone tell you that sketching is a waste of time nor is it just for amateurs. Terry Ludwig and Liz Haywood-Sullivan also use these same pointers in their workshops. These are all pastel painters but the same tips apply to any medium. I use the analogy that sketching is just like soccer drills, the more you practice, the better you get at your painting.
Happy Sketching and painting!

Folks, This week, we'll hang out and sketch at my house. I'll have a fire going, bring your sketch gear or bring those homemade sketchbooks with pre-painted pages and we'll do some collage work. I'll have coffee, tea (Cindy, I have the green Hojicha I was telling you about)...etc....Let me know who's coming so I have a count.
I have two Chihuahuas that will greet you at the door, they expect everyone to just fall in love with them so they will bark at you if they feel that they are being ignored, just warning you now, LOL.
If you want to learn the collage technique, email me on the side and I will tell you what else to bring from home and what I already have that you can use.
Please use the FB Group to contact me for location information.
Thanks
Gina
