This is an old Richard McKinley post that had some good basic information for thumbnail sketches. Many of you have expressed your challenges with what information actually needs to go into a sketch or plein air study when we are out sketching on location. This article on Richard's blog should be able to answer some of your questions. I thought these tips were great. Don't let anyone tell you that sketching is a waste of time nor is it just for amateurs. Terry Ludwig and Liz Haywood-Sullivan also use these same pointers in their workshops. These are all pastel painters but the same tips apply to any medium. I use the analogy that sketching is just like soccer drills, the more you practice, the better you get at your painting.
Happy Sketching and painting!
