Some Art news

For those of you that didn't see my Facebook post, I give the new Caran D'Ache  Museum Aquarelle Watercolor pencils a thumb's up.  Check out the post on Facebook....

For those of you wanting to really explore mixed media art journaling and exploring other ways to use those sketchbooks....There is an on line art club that costs $5 a month or $45 a year called the Artstronauts Club,  I have already gotten my $45 worth out of the lessons and articles provided already and I have only been on it several weeks. You can go to www.theartstronauts.com for more info.  If you want to check it out or find out more, call me and I can show you.  I can access it on my tablet, smartphone and  laptop.

Also,
Still catching up on my magazines.....The July/August 2013 Issue of Artist's Magazine had these items of interest.....

The add for the White Pitt Pen and it's use with highlighting watercolors caught my eye.

There was an article on using Yupo paper (commonly used for watercolors) that was interesting and informative.  I would recommend reading it if you want to try new things in watercolor.

The article of painting LARGE paintings en plein air was interesting and is something that some of the plein air painters out there may want to read,  Good Article.

There was an article about painting portraits and good color palettes to use in oil, pastel and watercolors.  Although I don't paint portraits, that one was a keeper.

There was an article about Tommi DePaolo and he had an interesting exercise with color on p 50 for children but I also have used a similar exercise for adults that eye opening.  Try it.

I also like the "Find your Tribe" article.

Sketch Club Holiday info

Folks,
After attending the South Bay Board Meeting last night, I realized that all the holidays this year are on Wednesday.

So I will throw this out there.  Folks who want to sketch this week, Meet at the Roast coffee and Tea company on Main Street from 6:30 to 8PM to sketch on the 18th.   I won't be there but if you want to get together and have some great coffee or other hot beverages and sketch, I am sure they would love that at Roast.  Try the Mexican hot chocolate, it has a kick.

Christmas and New Year's, I will issue a sketch challenge in a separate post.  ALSO, if any of you want to get together for some mixed media art journaling with those new sketchbooks you made, let me know, I have a large table we can work on at the house and I usually close my evenings working in my sketchbook so you are welcome to come over.  I have a few days off during the holiday so if anyone wants to assemble to just hang out, let me know.   I am trying not to let the holidays interfere with my creativity.  Been doing pretty good at it, too!

Bookbinding class in NYC

This is the location where I went before to learn bookbinding. The instructor is awesome. If you are looking to try the hard bound variety, she's someone to go to plus you get the treat of going into the city.

This Wednesday at 6:30 PM

Folks, I was going to schedule a nocturnal sketch and I was hoping we'd have enough snow to do that.  Unfortunately, from a sketching standpoint, the storm was a dud.

So as promised last month, we'll hit the SunVet Mall one more time before Christmas.  All the Christmas decorations are up, the Santa area has some adorable stuffed critters, and down by AC Moore, are cute animated stuff that I never knew they had displayed, until this year.

Hope to see you there.....

This Wednesday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Folks,
We will be meeting this week at the Patchogue Arts Council space on 20 Terry Street in Patchogue....it's the Art Space building.  You can bring your sketch gear and sketch or you can follow along as I demo how to make your own sketchbook,

If you want to learn how to make your own sketchbook, here's a good place to start.

For those on a budget, you can make these with what you have around the house, except for the paper.  Please read through and if you have any questions add them on the Facebook group.  I have thread you can use if you don't want to use dental floss.

If you want to make the sketchbook with me, here's what you need to bring with you:

22 x 30 inch sheet of watercolor or heavy printmaking paper (If you want to do both, bring two sheets.....Michael's carries 140 lb WC paper than some folks have used, it isn't bad....)
Yardstick or ruler
scissors
a large needle with a big eye, or a #18 or 22 tapestry needle
waxed dental floss, bookbinding thread, OR waxed linen thread (harder to find) ANY ONE of these will work PLUS I have waxed thread I can bring with me.
pencil

If you have tube watercolors and a big thirsty brush, bring them and a water container.

THESE TWO ITEMS BRING ONLY IF YOU HAVE THEM please don't feel you have to rush out and buy them:
an awl if you have one
bonefolder if you have one
