Folks, this week, to celebrate the first week of daylight savings time, lets go to the Islip Grange at the intersection of Broadway and Montauk Highway in Sayville…it's a great sketching spot.

For those of you who were brave enough to go down to sketch by the water this evening, please take photos of your sketches so I can post them on the blog…it was definitely "different." You can email them to the link on the blog...

This Wednesday at 7 PM

We are going to go to the TRY the evening outdoor sketching. It looks to be mild and clear for Wednesday. For those brave souls who want to brave the elements, bundle up... for the rest of us, sketching from your car will have to do.

We will be meeting at the Corey Beach area….down by the water. There is a dock toward the back that most of you are familiar with….great view of the night time sky and water for reflections.

There are some logistical issues with sketching in the dark….you will need light (obviously), something for your surface that won't interfere with your subject….you can pick up book lights for $10 at Bed Bath and Beyond that will work nicely. If you work in watercolor or color media, you will need to either light your palette or know you palette colors well to be able to use them in the dark. You might want to bring along that white tube of gouache for lights over darks.

You can get to it by turning down Atlantic Ave in Blue Point, near the Mexican restaurant on Main St/Montauk Highway…very easy to get to….most of us have been there….

Oh, Flo's won't be open yet… get your coffee or tea before you arrive because there's nothing open down there this time of year.

Wednesday February 29 LEAP YEAR night at 6PM

Well, we've been watching the weather and was hoping we could get out to do some star gazing and some astronomy sketching….Jupiter and Venus are visible in the Western Sky and it would have been fun to try to capture (from our cars) the night sky. Alas, it looks like Wednesday is going to be a drippy sort of evening. Queen CIty Cupcakes has more new stuff to sketch, so we are going to go to Queen City Cupcakes this week. Again, for those who haven't been there, it's not all cupcakes, they have some really cool stuff in her shop.

We'll try for the night sky sketching next week. For those of you that have IPhones, the pUniverse APP is awesome for finding cool stuff in the night sky.

Folks, this week we having an opportunity to see and sketch a great demo....stop by to join the SBAA Members Meeting Wednesday Feb 22nd at 7:15 pm at the Bellport Community Center, 4 Bell St, Bellport to see a demo in fish printing...description below. Should be a great demo and sketch opportunity.

Gyotaku (Japanese 魚拓, from gyo "fish" + taku "rubbing") is a traditional form of Japanese fish printing or rubbing, dating from the mid-19th century, a form of nature printing used by fishermen to record their catches. In order to make a gyotaku print, one places the subject (e.g.fish, crab, scallop shell) on a wooden bench and paints one side with sumi ink. Next a piece of paper or other material is laid over the ink-covered fish. Finally, one rubs the material until there is the image of the fish on it.

Modern gyotaku artists often substitute acrylic or other painting material for the traditional sumi-e.
