Folks,
This week we are going to Quench on 90 W Main Street in Patchogue, across from the Brick House Brewery.  Quench is the local wine boutique and they welcome us to come and sketch there....speaking from experience, wine bottles may have a simple design but they are a challenge to sketch....so if you are interested in a challenge, bring your chair and come on out to Quench.  Queen City cupcakes is a few doors down if you want to stop there first for coffee or an absolutely devine hot chocolate.

This Wednesday Oct 3rd at 7PM

I know some of you have other committments and I am hoping that 7PM is convenient for you.  With the sun setting earlier and it looks like there may be rain on Wednesday, I am scheduling us for an indoor venue.  I was hoping we could do a full moon sketching event but rain would wash that out.

We will be sketching at the Roast Coffee and Tea Company in Main Street in Patchogue...a few doors west of the theater.

I hope there is parking because that is becoming more an more of an issue in Patchogue these days.   There should be parking behind the shop if there isn't on Main Street, and there should be parking behind the library as well, across the street.

Hope to see you there........

This Wednesday Sept 19 at 6PM

First, we want to say we had a great sketch night at Carol Amodeo's house last week.    We are very grateful we had the opportunity to sketch there, Thank you Carol!  We loved it and we would love to come back again!

2nd... It's supposed to rain on Wednesday.  For those of you wishing to sketch, we will schedule the Roast Coffee and Tea Company this week for sketch night and if the rain lets up, there are many places on Main Street to sketch.   Please email or FB each other to let each other know if you can  make it or not...

Hey you landscape painters!.....try challenging yourself with sketching people in the coffee shop or a store front aka cityscape on Main Street...you may be surprised what you learn from the exercise!   Changing it up is good!

Stay dry!  Post those sketches on our FB group page!

WOW, this next outing is September already.....REALLLY?????  Where did the summer go?

This week, hopefully the weather holds up...we are going to sketch/paint/do studies down by the bay at the end of Pine Neck Ave in Patchogue....Pine Neck is best accessed from South Country Road....

Coming from Sayville's direction...take Montak Highway to South Country Road....(Intersection is at the Swan Cleaners)....Take South Country road to the 2nd right and turn right on Pine Neck Ave....take Pine Neck Ave all the way down to the end where the guard rail/dead end is and turn into the park there.   We will be sketching there.

Bring insect repellent and a chair....this is a great spot for sunsets but also has a scruffy beach with beach grasses which makes an interesting subject, especially in the evening,

Find us on Facebook and see what we've been doing on sketch night!

This Wednesday August 29th at 6:30PM

Ok, the weather was bad last week, let's try the Maritime Museum again...looks like we may actually get a sunset tomorrow evening.

This Wednesday August 15th at 6PM

Weather permitting....if the weather turns out to be severe in the evening, as they are calling for thunderstorms...stay indoors and sketch something around the house.  Better to stay safe.

We are going to the Long Island Maritime Museum this week.  There's lots to sketch there including sunsets, if the weather holds out.

Don't forget to bring a chair or find a bench and sketch the town.

Sunday, July 8, 2012

This Wednesday July 11th at 6:30 PM

Folks, we are going to sketch from the Ranger Station on Laurel St and Argyle Ln in Patchogue, on the  East side of the Patchogue River....we sketched here in the spring and it was chilly, I am hoping it will be nicer on Wednesday.

This Wednesday, Independence Day

Folks, because Wednesday is a holiday we won't be sketching, however I enourage you do partipate in our Independence Day Challenge.  Sketch some of your Independence Day Activities this week and either post them on our Facebook Page or email them to me (or both) and I will post them on the blog (not everyone sees the FB group).

Also, a reminder that SBAA is having their Annual Artists on the Lane.... you can read more about it below on Patch written by Roseanne or you can go to the links below....if you are looking to sell some work, check it out.

New Sketch Showcased

If you haven't noticed, the picture for the blog has changed.  Tom DeGruyl, a long time Patchogue Sketch Club member, has done this beautiful sketch of a bird's nest.  We figured, with Spring in full swing...this   nice sketch of Tom's would be great to use as the main blog photo.

This Wednesday June 13th at 6:30PM

It looks like it might be a rainy day.  Rainy days are tough to schedule.
The Village of Patchogue is changing.    Before some of these changes take affect....I am going to suggest sketching on Main Street in Patchogue this week...if it's chilly, you can stop in Roast or Queen City Cupcakes for a coffee...or Quench/Brick House Brewery if you'd like to be warmed up in a different way.

"Boundaries" will be Quench to the Theater/Library and South Ocean to the Garden on Terry Street.

If you'd like, we can all meet at Roast at 8PM to show each other what we've done.

I am suggesting this sketch night in Patch because we are recording what we see in our sketches and the Village is taking on a new face...we are recording history in a way, so let's use this Wednesday to sketch the changes going on.  If it's raining, you can duck in any of the businesses to sketch from the inside, out.

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

This Wednesday at 6:30PM

Watching the weather, looks like there's a chance of thunderstorms...we'll take a chance and sketch down by the Maritime Museum in Sayville.  This way if it rains, you can sketch from your car.

Hope to see you there!

We'll meet around 6PM.  Bring the insect repellent just in case.

Tomorrow at 6PM

Let's take a chance with the weather and sketch at a new spot I found...The Watch Hill Ranger Station at the intersection of Laurel St and Argyle Ln on the Patchogue River...not a bad spot actually.  We'll meet around 6PM.

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

This Wednesday April 25th at 6PM

As this is the fourth Wednesday of the month, SBAA will be having their meeting at 7:15 in Bellport.  So, to make it easy for folks to attend both sketch night and SBAA...we'll sketch in Bellport on Main street then head over to the meeting.  If it's chilly, you can sketch from your car.

Sunday, April 15, 2012

This Wednesday April 18 at 6PM

We are going to meet this week in Sayville down by the water where if it's nice, we can sit out and sketch or have the option to sketch from our cars if it's chilly.

You need to take S Main St/Middle Road to Seaman Road. Follow Seaman Road South to Brown's River Road, which should be the 2nd road on your right. Take that to the the end until you reach the waterfront and we will be sketching there. It's a good location for either sketching from the car or out in the open.

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Wednesday April 11th at 6PM

We are going to meet at the Bellport Dock at 6PM to sketch. There's plenty of space to park and sketch from our cars if the weather is less than favorable. The dock is at the end of Bellport Lane, down by the water.

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

This Wednesday at 6PM

We are going to sketch over at Post Morrow Homestead On Bay Ave...You take Montauk Highway from Bellport to Brookhaven Hamlet.....turn on Beaver Dam Road heading toward the water and make a right on Bay Ave...Post Morrow will be on the right...there's signs on the property....

This link also has a map...I notice there's also mention of a snowy owl on Fire Island....hmmmm, we may have to make an excursion over there.

It's not a bad place to sketch or do studies. There's water, landscape opportunities.

Monday, March 26, 2012

Monday, March 12, 2012

This Wednesday at 6 PM March 14th

Folks, this week, to celebrate the first week of daylight savings time, lets go to the Islip Grange at the intersection of Broadway and Montauk Highway in Sayville…it's a great sketching spot.

Tonight's sketches

For those of you who were brave enough to go down to sketch by the water this evening, please take photos of your sketches so I can post them on the blog…it was definitely "different." You can email them to the link on the blog...

Monday, March 5, 2012

This Wednesday at 7 PM

We are going to go to the TRY the evening outdoor sketching. It looks to be mild and clear for Wednesday. For those brave souls who want to brave the elements, bundle up... for the rest of us, sketching from your car will have to do.

We will be meeting at the Corey Beach area….down by the water. There is a dock toward the back that most of you are familiar with….great view of the night time sky and water for reflections.

There are some logistical issues with sketching in the dark….you will need light (obviously), something for your surface that won't interfere with your subject….you can pick up book lights for $10 at Bed Bath and Beyond that will work nicely. If you work in watercolor or color media, you will need to either light your palette or know you palette colors well to be able to use them in the dark. You might want to bring along that white tube of gouache for lights over darks.

For those of you who don't know Corey Beach, here's the location on the map.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=coreys+creek+park&ie=UTF8&hl=en&hq=Coreys+Creek+Park&hnear=Coreys+Creek+Park,+Blue+Point,+Suffolk,+New+York+11715&z=14

You can get to it by turning down Atlantic Ave in Blue Point, near the Mexican restaurant on Main St/Montauk Highway…very easy to get to….most of us have been there….

Oh, Flo's won't be open yet… get your coffee or tea before you arrive because there's nothing open down there this time of year.

Monday, February 27, 2012

Wednesday February 29 LEAP YEAR night at 6PM

Well, we've been watching the weather and was hoping we could get out to do some star gazing and some astronomy sketching….Jupiter and Venus are visible in the Western Sky and it would have been fun to try to capture (from our cars) the night sky. Alas, it looks like Wednesday is going to be a drippy sort of evening. Queen CIty Cupcakes has more new stuff to sketch, so we are going to go to Queen City Cupcakes this week. Again, for those who haven't been there, it's not all cupcakes, they have some really cool stuff in her shop.

Queen City Cupcakes...62 West Main Street, Patchogue (Across from Brick House Brewery)…

We'll try for the night sky sketching next week. For those of you that have IPhones, the pUniverse APP is awesome for finding cool stuff in the night sky.

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

This Wednesday at 7:15 PM

Folks, this week we having an opportunity to see and sketch a great demo....stop by to join the SBAA Members Meeting Wednesday Feb 22nd at 7:15 pm at the Bellport Community Center, 4 Bell St, Bellport to see a demo in fish printing...description below. Should be a great demo and sketch opportunity.
Chris Taylor will demonstrate this ancient art form!

fromWikipedia:
Gyotaku (Japanese éšæ‹“, from gyo "fish" + taku "rubbing") is a traditional form of Japanese fish printing or rubbing, dating from the mid-19th century, a form of nature printing used by fishermen to record their catches. In order to make a gyotaku print, one places the subject (e.g.fish, crab, scallop shell) on a wooden bench and paints one side with sumi ink. Next a piece of paper or other material is laid over the ink-covered fish. Finally, one rubs the material until there is the image of the fish on it.
Modern gyotaku artists often substitute acrylic or other painting material for the traditional sumi-e.

It's not just about the cupcakes….

Make some time to come out and sketch this neat little shop.
