Chris Taylor will be conducting a demo in fish printing - Gyotaku over a batik brackground on fabric, at 7:15 on Wednesday, January 25th, 2012, at the Bellport Community Center, 4 Bell St. Bellport, NY....so bring the sketch gear and also be prepared to take notes.

We are returning to Queen City Cupcakes next week.....there is a LOT to sketch here and be indoors at the same time, so we will be returning next week. We will be off 23rd, and we will post the 30th shortly. We will be scheduling the Patchogue bowling alley and other sites soon.

We may do some holiday sketching during the month of December to make the month festive, also, some of us would like to try Night/Nocturne sketching/painting so we are trying to find a way to do that and stay warm. Any ideas would be appreciated regarding night outings. If you have any comments, please post them below.

After saying goodbye to Ms. Smith, grab a map and hit the streets to take the Walking Arts Tour. In addition to the Walking Tour Exhibit, additional arts venues will be open including: the 2011 Patchogue Arts Biennial at Briarcliffe College, WH Design/The Shoppe, Shands Loft Gallery at the Brickhouse Brewery, Gather Studio, the Gallery at 40 So, and Artspace Patchogue Gallery.
2PM- Join PTPA Board member and Patchogue Arts Festival Co-Chair Christopher Capobianco for a guided tour of the theatre.
2:30-4PM-The Plaza Cinema & Media Arts Center will be screening "Surprise Short Films"

This Wednesday, barring inclement weather...we are going to sketch at the Gazebo in Brookhaven Hamlet if it is nice out. If a storm does roll in, just assume we're canceled.

Directions coming from Patchogue, go through Bellport (via South Country Road) past the Gateway Theater and at the next traffic light, make a right onto Beaverdam Road. Make your next left onto Fireplace Neck Road. Drive pass the Brookhaven Elementary School. The Gazebo will be on your left, just park on the road. There's ducks, flowers, a wooden bridge, and the gazebo to sketch.

If you can't find a parking spot on Main street, there is parking behind Starbuck's.

This Wednesday we will be sketching at Blue Point....Make sure you bring a chair...We will be meeting at the very end of Blue Point Avenue. From Main Street, turn onto Blue Point Ave and head toward the water....go to the very end, there's a little pier there where you can park...we will be by the water or along the street by the water.

We did some very nice sketches here last year...there are some nice houses for those of you wanting to do something other than maritime scenes...there's a marshy area, great for a sunset and it's a great area to do skies.

This week we are going to sketch by the water again. Hopefully it will be cooler by the water. Take South Country Road to Beaver Damn Road....if you are coming from Bellport/Patchogue, make a right on Beaver Dam, if you are coming from the East, make a left and go all the way down to the end. There is a Marina there and a few park benches. It might be buggy but the water view isn't bad, I did a painting there in the dead of winter in the snow so it's not a bad spot. Bring the insect repellent just in case.

Canceling outdoor part of the session this evening

Folks,

The worst part of planning ahead is the fickle weather....Watching the weather for this evening, I am going to err on the side of caution and cancel the outdoor part of the sketch group due to the potential for thunderstorms. I'd rather play it safe. However, if you would like to attend this evening's SBAA meeting at 4 Bell St at 7:15, many of us will be there and you can sketch the meeting if you like. They are doing a critique if you would like to bring work to be critiqued.

Apparently there is road construction on the main passageway to where the little park is....To make things less of a hassle, I am going to move us to the waterfront at the end of Bayview Ave starting at 6:30...

For Bayview Ave, Just take South Country Road and turn on Bayview Ave and head straight to the water. Parking is tight, please don't block someone's drive or another car.

I hope it doesn't rain.....I scheduled us to go to the Patchogue Shores Park at 7PM on Wednesday. To get there, you need to take South Country Road in East Patchogue to Roosevelt Blvd, south, toward the water...Make a left on Summit Ave and follow it around until it turns into Ocean. At the end of Ocean there is a park. We will be sketching there in the park. Please respond if you are coming because I need to know how many are coming for parking arrangements.

If it rains, we will head over to Main Street in Patchogue and sketch on Main Street instead.

Wow, June already! Let's sketch in Bellport this week, down near the water at the end of Bellport Lane....it's getting more in season, so parking may or may not be restricted. There's a park on the left as you get down by the water that has some places to sit. For those of you not interested in the water location, there's Bellport Lane and Main Street all within walking distance.

Meeting time will be spread out from 4:30 until dusk, with maybe a dusk pitstop at Carla Marla's Ice Cream Parlor.

We will meet on River Road, between River Street and Erwin Road, in Sayville. There's a place we can park by the water and sketch. Take Montauk Hwy to Foster Ave and drive toward the water. Make a left on Erwin and then a right on River Road and the waterfront will be on your left, its a boating supply. If its cold or inclement weather, wear appropriate clothing or prepare to sketch from your car.

The time frame is an open time, from 4:30 to Dusk. No rules, arrive when you can, leave when you need to. We've adjusted the time to make it easier for folks to sketch within their schedule. This Wednesday has a potential for inclement weather and it is also the SBAA monthly meeting with a demo that might interest some of you. I am going to recommend attending the demo and we can sketch there as well as watch a demo about painting with acrylics.

Here's the official info:

The South Bay Art Association will host guest speaker, Mary Samuels, a local artist who will be demonstrating her impressionistic approach to a floral still life. Mary will be using acrylic paint and a live floral arrangement. The guest speaker will follow the regular meeting of the SBAA which takes place at 7:15PM at the Bellport Community Center on Bell Street in Bellport Village. The meetings are free and open to the public. New members are welcome

Weather permitting, we will sketch down on the Bellport waterfront. If you go to the end of the Bellport Lane, there is a dock where you can park and sketch.

The forecast is calling for rain, it is by the water and March is usually cold and windy by the water. Rain or shine, it's going to be cold. Dress appropriately or prepare to sketch from your car. I have done sketches from the dock from my car and you can get pretty good subjects there.

Book Review "1000 Journal Pages" by Dawn DeVries Sokol

I have been wanting to get this book and my daughter got me a Barnes and Noble gift card for Christmas. I ordered it on line.

This book is not a how to book. This book is loaded with photos of 1000 journal pages, or pretty much, a Grown Up picture book. This is a great book for ideas and inspiration and gives you a peek into the pages of other artists journals. This is a great resource for one's personal art book library and this is a great reference for those who want to teach journaling to others. It's loaded with examples that can be shown to students or those new to journaling.

I like the two pages up front that contain journal prompts for those with a loss of what to put in their journals. Very inspiring and motivating book!

PAC Meeting

Saturday was the General Meeting for the Patchogue Arts Council. The meeting's agenda included the elections of the new trustees. Joel Peck will be returning as the PAC President.

Meeting details included Membership stats, the Walking Arts Tour/3rd Patchogue Arts Festival Reports, awards for Volunteers of the Year (2010), updates on the next Biennial, a member show at St Joseph's and other activities.

Upcoming events include a Spring Mixer in March and opportunities for members.

It's supposed to snow Friday so try to get out and do some snow sketches on Saturday. Many of us have been getting out to do both, plein air painting and sketching out in the snow and experiencing EXTREME painting. Get out there while there is still snow!

For those of you not familiar with a Sketch Crawl, the idea is for artists to get out and sketch! Fill that sketchbook, get out with other artists, then post what you did on line later that day. Have fun with it!

First Gathering of the New Year

Happy New Year! To start off sketching for the new year, we'll gather at the Roast Coffee and Tea Company on Main Street in Patchogue. So if you have time and want to come out for some Java and for some sketching company, we'll be meeting at 7.

We are still looking for a gathering place to meet while it's cold out, where we can set up still lives and maybe do some other sketchbook activities where folks won't mind if we get a little messy.

New Book on Sketching

I have a great new book that I have been reading, just published by North Light Books called Sketchbook Confidential, edited by Pamela Wissman and Stefanie Laufersweiler.

This book has sketching secrets from private collections and sketchbooks of over 40 artists. What I like about this book is the common thread that all the artists have about why they sketch.

You can purchase it from Barnes and Noble or even North Light books. Or, request that your local library carry it, this is a book that has a lot of great sketches and writes about the value of sketching. All these artists say that sketching is as necessary to an artist as drills are to an athlete. Read more by checking out the book!

If you would like to learn some other journaling sketchbook techniques, make sure to bring along your watercolors, a sketchbook that you would like to work in, a permanent (waterproof) glue stick and some magazines or other things that you would like to glue into your book and a pair of scissors.

Since this is Thanksgiving week, I expect that many folks will be busy Wednesday....however, if you are around and you are up to an evening latte or decaf cappuccino, come on over to the Roast Coffee and Tea Trading Company on Main Street....it will be a very informal gathering, just coffee and a sketch and maybe one of those nice fat cupcakes.

For those who, understandably, cannot make it but want an excuse to sketch, I am issuing a Thanksgiving Challenge. Between Wednesday and Sunday, get out and sketch anything related to the holiday, the time of year, autumn or anything else related to the holiday. Inspiring Book for sketchers

I read a book recently, "An Illustrated Life" by Danny Gregory. It's a great book, there's artists of all kinds, sharing the pages of their sketch books and telling why they love to sketch, the value of sketching, how it relieves stress and is a great place for working out ideas and issues with the art they are working on....some are cartoonists, designers, writers. It's very inspirational.

I bought mine at the North Light Shop, www.northlightshop.com. Put this one on your "to read" list!

There was an article written about us in The Patch....I ran into Krystle, the author of the article, at a dedication ceremony for my husband's aunt, she told me about the events of that evening, which happened to be on Lake Drive, overlooking Swan Lake. One of these days, we are going to have to write a book about the Sketch Club's adventures.

Wednesday is calling for a thunderstorm threat, at least on the last weather forecast I checked out. The color on Swan Lake is gorgeous right now, I say we tackle Swan Lake again, and if we get a storm, we can either sit in the car and sketch (or hang out in the new coffee shop near the Patchogue Theater if you aren't into sitting in storms). For those who haven't been there, Swan Lake is at the Intersections of Main Street in Patchogue, Lake Drive and where South Country Road ends into Main Street in Patchogue. You can park over in CVS if you want that view, or you can park on Lake Drive and sketch as the sun goes down behind CVS. There's some spots to park on the left as you head up Lake Drive, park anywhere that looks legal, just be aware that the residents may question you, so just tell them you are part of the Patchogue Sketch Club. We'll sketch until the sun goes down....

You can Google Swan Lake in Patchogue NY and it will come up on the Google Map.

This week we will be sketching in Patchogue. We can meet by theater if it is a nice evening. Otherwise, there is a new coffee shop a few shops West of the the theater, in the same store front as the Bridgehampton Bank, we can sketch there if it is too cool.

Before or after sketching, we can walk around the corner to S Ocean Ave to see the Sketch Club's display in one of the store fronts....exact address posting to come, but it's on the East side of S Ocean, just south of Main St.

World Wide Sketch Crawl Saturday October 16th

Saturday is the 29th WW Sketch Crawl. This is a day when artists are encouraged to get out and sketch and be in the public eye to call attention to artistic creativity.

Some folks are heading out to Kings Park State Hospital around 9:30 AM on Saturday. After lunch, if you would like to continue to sketch, folks can head up to Nissequogue Park. Since it is October, please prepare for the weather and bring or wear appropriate attire. Those interested in the Kings Park outing can contact SusanT2004@verizon.net. Directions are: Sagtikos Parkway N to Sunken Meadow Exit SM4. Merge onto Country Road/E Northport Rd/Pulaski Road. This will become all Dock Road. Make a right onto St Johnland Road. Folks wills be meeting at the corner of St Johnland and Park Blvd.

For those not able to make the Kings Park outing, please report in where you will be sketching or where you ended up sketching so that we can post up here on our blog where everyone was out sketching. We are going to return to the Maritime Museum, if it isn't raining. The Long Island Maritime Museum is on 86 West Ave. From Sayville heading west down Main street, drive 2 blocks past the West Sayville Fire House, turn south on West Ave and follow the signs for the museum. The location has water views, boats, marsh, etc.

If it is raining, we'll sketch from the Sayville Starbucks on Main Street in Sayville.

I put the time down for 4:30 PM. You are welcome to come as early or as late as you want. Hopefully the sun will be out and it will be warm, but dress warmly because it is chilly by the water. This is a great sketching spot. If we aren't all together, email pix of what you did so they can be posted on the blog.

This sounds interesting...Artist Lake in Middle Island. The lake has an interesting history, it was formed from a glacier melt.

From Patchogue, take Sills/Yaphank Road (101 North). Bear right at light in Yaphank on Coram Road and go along side Upper Yaphank Lake onto Yaphank/Middle Island Road. Go Straight to Rt 25 (Middle Country Road). Make right onto Route 25. ...continue on until you see parking on the right.
